Janice comes from a strong family of artists working in painting, carving and batik. Her husband Wally Clarke Pwerle is also a respected painter and carver. Janice participated in batik workshops that were held in Utopia from 1977 to 1987. Her work in this medium is featured in the publication Utopia – A Picture Story, an exhibition of 88 works of silk. Soon after, Utopia artists were introduced to the medium of acrylics on canvas and Janice’s earliest works in this medium are featured in the publication Utopia Paintings, the First Works on Canvas, A Summer Project. Janice’s work has since been exhibited in group shows both nationally and internationally, and her works represented in the prestigious collections of Holmes á Court, the National Gallery of Australia and the National Gallery of Victoria.
